‘Of course not. But—’

‘Don’t you dare question my orders. I have told you what to do. Now see to it. At once.’ She turned away before he could protest further and returned to her chariot.

The first of the Trinovantians were arriving at the compound, and Syphodubnus ordered half his warriors to form a cordon to keep them as far back from the hall as possible. Then he picked his four men and set off to carry out the orders of his queen.

When the last of the settlement’s men of fighting age had entered the compound, Boudica ordered the gates to be closed and guarded by her warriors. The Trinovantes regarded the mounted Icenians warily. Scanning their faces, she could see that many were distrustful and afraid as they muttered among themselves. Slowly she raised her hands, and the crowd, at least five hundred strong, fell silent. She made no effort to address them, instead allowing the tension and expectation to build. At last she lowered her arms, drew a breath and began. She spoke just loudly enough for her audience to hear, her voice calm and clear.

‘You all know who I am. Many of you have seen me before when you proudly marched at my side. You were there when we won our victories at Camulodunum, Londinium and Verulamium. Some of you were in at the kill when we caught and destroyed a Roman legion. We are comrades, you and I, and I have come here as your ally, as your friend, as your leader, to ask that you take up arms once again and rejoin our struggle against Rome. It is a matter of honour. Your honour.’

She gazed over the sea of faces and swept her arm round in an arc, her finger pointing at them. ‘Honour demands that you wage war against the enemies of your people, and what greater enemy has any tribe in Britain confronted than the Romans? They are like a plague sweeping across our lands, destroying all in their path and feeding off those who are left like the bloodsucking leeches they are. What kind of a person permits themselves to be abused by Rome – robbed, raped and humiliated? What kind of person is so lacking in pride and honour that they would bow their head to accept the yoke that Rome wishes to burden them with?
